Etsuko Terada

Etsuko Terada   born in Tokyo,

She began piano lessons at the age of four in Tokyo, later studied at the Hochshule fur Musik in Vienna, the Juilliard School in New York, and Indiana University, Bloomington Ind. USA.

While studying in Europe and USA she received numerous honors from major international piano competitions such as the third prize gold medal at the 2nd Arthur Rubinstein International Piano Competition in Tel Aviv, where Maestro Rubinstein himself was on a Jury.  prize winner of the 6th Leeds International Piano Competition. She also received Chopin Society Award in Japan.

In 1979, Etsuko Terada made her debut at Wigmore Hall in London and since then she toured in GB, Germany, Finland, Latvia, Russia, Mexico, Panama, Peru, Bulgaria, Israel, Taiwan, Hong Kong, Canada and USA

Her playing tone is often described as “Beauty of Pearls” or “Technique of golden fine handcraft”

Besides playing solo recitals she often plays 4 hands and 2 piano duo concerts with her pianist husband Kikuo Watanabe and toured in many countries.

She also played chamber music concerts with world prominent players such as principal string players of the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra, the Amadeus String Quartet the Gewandhaus String Quartet and the Prazak Quartet etc. She was a soloist with many of world renown orchestras such as the Israel Philharmonic Orchestra, the BBC Northern Orchestra, Helsinki Philharmonic Orchestra, Leipzig Radio Orchestra, Dresden Philharmonic Orchestra, Sophia Philharmonic Orchestra, Denver Symphony Orchestra, and more. Performed with Conductors, Eliahu Imbal, Jiri Belohlavek, Sir Charles Mackerras Hiroyuki Iwaki, Takashi Asahina, Akeo Watanabe, Michiyoshi Inoue, Rafael Fruhbeck de Burgos, Brian Priestman, Philippe Entremont, and more. Terada also appeared in the Prague’s Spring Festival playing Beethoven’s the Emperor Concerto with Prague Symphony Orchestra.

She appeared as a soloist with all the major orchestras in Japan such as the NHK Symphony Orchestra, Japan Philharmonic Orchestra, New Japan Philharmonic Orchestra, Tokyo Metropolitan Orchestra, Tokyo Symphony Orchestra, Tokyo Philharmonic Orchestra, Yomiuri Symphony Orchestra, Osaka Philharmonic Orchestra, the Century Orchestra, Nagoya Philharmonic Orchestra, Hiroshima Symphony Orchestra, Sendai Philharmonic Orchestra, Sapporo Symphony Orchestra, Kyushu Philharmonic Orchestra and more. 

Etsuko Terada has made many recordings: Debut Album of Mozart and Chopin solo works by SONY label, Chopin’s Piano Concerto No.1 and Mozart Piano Concerto No.23 K488 with Vienna Symphony Orchestra conducted by Philippe Entremont , Solo works of 3 Chopin Albums, Schumann Album, Mozart Sonata Album, two pianos album of Stravinsky`s Rite of Spring and Rachmaninoff suite No.2, and recently Schubert’s four hands music album was released which includes the world premiere recording of Schubert`s string quintet op.163 `s piano four hands transcription version.

Terada studied with renown pianist and professors over the world, Dieter Weber (Vienna), Sacha Gorodnitzki(Julliard School), Menahem Pressler (Indiana University),   master classes of  Leon Fleisher, Nikita Magaloff, and Stanislav Neuhaus

 

Etsuko Terada was a professor of Nihon University College of Art graduate school in Tokyo from year of 2000.to 2020.

She is invited as a jury to numerous piano competitions and has been a committee member of Nihon Music Competition.
